Hello UNC Asheville Computer Science students, alumni, friends, and community partners!

As the 2025-2026 academic year comes to a close, I’m excited to recognize a few highlights from the past year:

  • We welcomed our first cohort of DATASCI Scholars!
  • The 2026 graduating class (fall ’25 and spring ’26) was the largest since 2020!
  • Prof. Farzana Rashid had a paper accepted at the Association of Computation Linguistics (ACL) Conference.
  • Prof. Van Wart and I taught a course titled “Industry Team Project” where students worked on an NCInnovation-funded project creating an app for parents of young children with cerebral palsy and other motor delays, in collaboration with a pediatrician at Emory Medical School.
  • We held our third annual Asheville Computer Science Day on March 28, thanks to our ACM Student org.
  • We sent two programming competition teams to the CCSC Midsouth Conference. This was our first official programming competition since COVID! Thanks to Prof. Bogert for serving as the official team coach.

Thank you to our network of alumni, friends, and community partners who continue to support UNC Asheville Computer Science–the students, faculty, and staff thank you! Our department did not do a fundraiser this year (I received a nasty email from an alumnus last year during the Give UNC Asheville campaign) but we still need support for things like sending students to conferences and programming competitions, so I encourage you to support our students through our Donate page. See our Why Donate? page to see all the ways your donation to our Student Success Fund benefits UNCA CS students. Thank you!
