News NCInnovation Project
UNC Asheville is part of an NCInnovation-funded project to support parents of young children with Cerebral palsy and other motor delays. The project is a collaboration between Dr. Gavin Colquitt at Appalachian State University, Dr. Nathalie Maitre, a pediatrician from Emory School of Medicine and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and UNC Asheville’s Computer Science department.
As part of the project, UNCA Computer Science students in the new “Industry Team Project” course are extending Dr. Maitre’s previous work by developing a mobile app to deliver educational and social support content to parents. In the course, which is team-taught by UNCA CS Profs. Sarah Van Wart and Kevin Sanft, students have gained experience in all aspects of the project development process from building initial wireframes in Figma, to designing web-based and mobile user interface, to implementing the backend database and APIs. The funding includes support for several Software Engineering Interns who will continue developing the app over the summer in anticipation of a pilot trial in the fall.
